How to apply for an apprenticeship?

There are thousands of opportunities for you to find and apply for apprenticeships, whether online, in person or through word of mouth.

To earn while you learn in an apprenticeship, you’ll need to be aged 16 and over, live in England, Scotland or Wales and not be in full-time education.

To make a successful application you will need to have a good apprenticeship CV and covering letter.   

How do you search for an apprenticeship?

There are a number of ways to search for a suitable apprenticeship.

  • One of the best websites to look for current apprenticeship vacancies is Talentview. You can filter your searches by job role, location and specific apprentice levels
  • The Government run an Apprenticeship Service, where you can search for apprenticeship opportunities online

What should your application include?

CV

A strong CV is an absolute top priority when applying for an apprenticeship. It is your best way to make a good first impression with an employer. Many apprenticeships advertised online will ask for a CV to be uploaded as part of the application process.

Covering letter

The basics of a good cover letter is that it is the story of your CV – where you show how your experience and skills can make you attractive to an employer. Try and keep it to four paragraphs and one side of A4 paper.
