Chelsea Cashman, Apprentice Carpenter
Chelsea Cashman used to work in an Aldi Warehouse but was unhappy and wanted a change in career.
Through the ‘Communities for You’ Scheme Chelsea was offered the opportunity of a 6 week work experience placement on site with Willis Construction as part of their Social Value engagement on a site in Bute Street.
Within 2 weeks of starting her placement, Willis Construction spotted her potential and offered her a job.
Chelsea has been with Willis Construction now for 2 years and is currently studying as a L2 Carpentry Apprentice at CAVC’s Barry College. She is a key member of the project team working on the Cadwyn Housing Project on Schooner Way in Cardiff where they are building over 120 apartments in 4 blocks plus 3 town houses which will be used as part social and part private housing.
As a slightly older entrant to the industry (late 20’s) Chelsea feels like she has a lot more confidence now than when she was younger which has helped with being on site.
"I love seeing other women in higher-up positions like our Client Jo. Jo runs the project for the Client side and is in charge telling our team what they need to do on the site."
Her favourite part of her job is the satisfaction of making items used on site and having pride and being part of the finished build.
She loves to show her stepson the projects she’s been a part of and he already wants to be her apprentice when he grows up!
